Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and licensed Mechanical Engineer to support the continued
growth of an expanding in-house engineering practice within a collaborative Architecture,
Engineering, and Construction (AEC) environment.
This is a highly visible and foundational role responsible for leading mechanical and
plumbing engineering design efforts across healthcare, institutional, and commercial projects.
The Mechanical Engineer will design and produce stamped mechanical and plumbing
construction documents, coordinate mechanical scope within the BIM environment, and
collaborate closely with architectural, electrical, structural, and external consulting teams
throughout all phases of project delivery.
The Mechanical Engineer will work in tandem with Electrical Engineering teams to provide
comprehensive in-house building systems coverage. The role requires strong expertise in
HVAC system design, plumbing systems, BIM coordination, construction administration, and
multidisciplinary project collaboration.
Healthcare project experience is highly preferred, particularly experience involving infection
control ventilation, pressurization relationships, and medical gas coordination. The successful
candidate must be capable of working independently as the sole in-house mechanical
engineer while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary project environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
▪ Design and produce stamped mechanical and plumbing construction documents across all
project phases including schematic design, design development, construction documentation,
and construction administration.
▪ Perform HVAC system design including heating, cooling, ventilation, and air distribution
systems; perform load calculations and size and specify equipment and distribution systems
appropriate to project type and occupancy.
▪ Design plumbing systems including domestic hot and cold water, sanitary systems, storm
drainage, and natural gas systems; coordinate medical gas systems on applicable healthcare
projects with licensed medical gas contractors.
▪ Coordinate mechanical and plumbing scope within the project BIM model; participate in
multidisciplinary coordination meetings and resolve conflicts with architectural, electrical,
structural, and civil teams.
▪ Coordinate with Electrical Engineering teams regarding mechanical equipment power
requirements, controls integration, and Building Automation System (BAS) interfaces.
▪ Prepare mechanical and plumbing specifications across applicable MasterFormat divisions;
review shop drawings, product submittals, and contractor documentation during construction
administration.
▪ Conduct site visits during construction to observe mechanical and plumbing installations,
respond to RFIs, review field conditions, and confirm conformance with construction
documents.
▪ Support business development initiatives by contributing to proposals, technical
presentations, and client meetings where in-house engineering capability is a differentiator.
▪ Establish mechanical and plumbing standards, typical details, specification libraries, and
engineering workflows as the engineering practice continues to expand.
QUALIFICATIONS
▪ Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent required; Master’s degree
preferred.
▪ Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) required — Michigan registration or confirmed
reciprocity eligibility required at time of hire.
▪ Mechanical PE license required.
▪ 7+ years of mechanical engineering experience with demonstrated expertise in HVAC and
plumbing systems design for commercial, institutional, or healthcare projects.
▪ Experience in an AEC firm or related multidisciplinary design environment preferred.
▪ Experience producing construction documents in Revit and AutoCAD required.
▪ Familiarity with applicable building codes, mechanical codes, plumbing codes, and energy
standards required.
▪ Healthcare, institutional, or commercial project experience preferred; healthcare mechanical
experience including pressurization relationships, medical gas coordination, and infection
control ventilation is a strong plus.
▪ Ability to work independently as the sole in-house mechanical engineer while collaborating
effectively within a multidisciplinary project environment.
▪ Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable interacting with clients,
contractors, consultants, and project stakeholders.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position operates within a professional office and project environment requiring close
collaboration with architects, engineers, contractors, consultants, and clients. Periodic site
visits and construction observations may be required depending on project needs.
The role involves both office-based engineering design work and field coordination activities
throughout multiple phases of project delivery.
